Dominik Andrin Hummel

Technician Specialist · Forest & Soil Ecology · Graduate Researcher

Profile

I am Dominik Andrin Hummel. I spent five years working in environmental research at the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL), most recently as a Technician Specialist. I hold a Master’s degree in Agricultural Science with a specialization in Animal Science and am now a Fulbright Scholar pursuing an M.S. in Ecology at Colorado State University, based in the Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology. I want to build a career where conservation science and human realities meet as equals. Lasting conservation has to make room for both ecological needs and the people who live in those landscapes. I want to work on conservation that is shaped together through science, local knowledge, and the people who ultimately make change possible.

Work Experience

Technician Specialist — WSL (Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research)

Responsible for the coordination and long-term operation of national-scale forest monitoring infrastructure, combining technical expertise, extensive fieldwork, sensor networks, data management, and collaboration across interdisciplinary and international research projects.

  • Management of 68 ecological TreeNet research sites across Switzerland
  • Coordination and maintenance of ecosystem sensor networks
  • Technical training/expertise in sensor installation for national and international research projects (TreeNet, ICOS, UPSCALE, FORWARDS)
  • Development of GPS usage standards and internal training
Scientific Assistant — WSL

Contributed to interdisciplinary urban ecology research through spatial analysis, field coordination, and stakeholder engagement.

  • Spatial and ecological analysis for the PAPPUS project
  • Landowner surveys and coordination of the field team for data sampling
Technician — WSL

Supported national soil monitoring efforts through field sampling, laboratory work, and geospatial data processing. Excavate soil pits to capture the morphological, chemical and physical properties of the solid soil components.

  • Field sampling, soil sample processing and laboratory analysis for the Swiss National Soil Inventory
  • High-precision geolocation using EMLID Reach GPS
  • Geospatial data mapping in R
Assistant — WSL

Assisted in ecological data processing and analysis, focusing on vegetation structure and canopy metrics.

  • Analysis of hemispherical images and LI-COR Data to asses Leaf Area Index (LAI) on long term experimental sites
  • Custom R scripts for data processing
Intern — WSL

Gathered hemispherical imagery and LI-COR measurements for LWF (Long-Term Forest Ecoystem Research), contributing to ecosystem monitoring in remote, environmentally challenging regions of Switzerland.

  • Taking hemispehrical pictures and collecting LI-COR data shortly before sunrise
